NEW – Corsa Axle-Back Exhaust for 2011 Ford Shelby GT500

The 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500 is a beast. 550 horsepower and 510 ft-lbs of torque for as little as $50k…not too shabby all things considered. While Car and Driver’s review of the GT500 is critical of the Shelby’s understeer and rear live axle (more on that in a second), it seems generally positive. After all, what’s not to love about a 550 horsepower Mustang? Unless you’re staunchly anti-Ford, the answer is…I think I can build a better Mustang for $50k.
Take a stock 2011 GT Mustang for $30,500k, and then:
- Add a Roush tuner kit supercharger that can produce as much as 750hp – $6000
- Swap out the stock Ford suspension for a new suspension kit (maybe even one from Roush) – $1500
- Swap out the stock brakes for an after-market brake kit (again, maybe from Roush) – $2500
- Add a new axle-back exhaust system – $600
- Add a new set of forged aluminum wheels and a nice set of tires – $2500
Total cost? $15,000 max + labor…and instead of having 550hp I’d be knocking of the door of 700. The extra $5k could go towards some transmission upgrades, a new rear axle ratio, and some extra tires.
Is this the smartest way to go? Probably not. The GT500 from Ford comes with a lot of nice extras. Still, it’s more fun to build your own ride, isn’t it?
BY THE WAY, the criticism of the Mustang’s live axle should always come with the following disclosure: live rear axles perform better on the drag strip. If you’re looking for a rear suspension that launches good and hard every time, you’re looking for a live axle. C&D doesn’t like to acknowledge drag racing as a legitimate personal use of a new vehicle, but I’d guess that more owners take their Mustangs to the drag strip than they do to the local road course. Ergo, I don’t think the rear live axle is so bad.
